The Behavioral Health Programs Clinical Research Service is an integral part of the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Medical Center. Our goals are to enhance the understanding of the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of psychiatric illness with an emphasis on mood and anxiety disorders. The service offers some of the latest innovations and discoveries in the fields of psychopharmacology and brain stimulation. The program includes phases two and three clinical trials, larger multi-center clinical studies, and small, pilot exploratory treatment trials. Program support derives from the National Institute of Mental Health, industry, and from private donations.
While psychiatric research has long been a tradition at NYU Medical Center, the Behavioral Health Program component, located in Suite 7D in the Schwartz Health Care Center of Tisch Hospital, was established recently, in 1999. Reporting to the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Robert Cancro, M.D., the multidisciplinary team consists of Norman Sussman, M.D., David Ginsberg, M.D., Lenard Adler, M.D., John Rotrosen, M.D., Greg Alsip, M.D., James C-Y Chou, M.D., and Leslie Prichep, Ph.D. Colloborations with the New York VA Medical Center (Drs. Adler and Rotrosen), the Hospital for Joint Diseases (Dr. Adler), and with Bellevue Hospital (Dr. Chou) occur as needed to maximize our ability to recruit the most suitable subjects for our trials. At Tisch Hospital, outpatient trials are conducted in Suite 7D while inpatient studies are conducted on the psychiatric inpatient unit located on the 10th floor of the Cooperative Care Building.
The service is a training site, on an elective basis, for psychiatry residents, some of whom play an active role on the research team. Internships and electives are also available for medical, graduate, college, and high school students.
