The Seventh Annual Latino Expo
Featuring NYU Cancer Institute Experts:
What You Should Know About
Cancer Prevention & Screening
NEW YORK, Oct. 12, 2005 —NYU Cancer Institute is one of the sponsors in this year’s Seventh Annual Latino Expo, a celebration of the Latino experience and culture taking place this Sunday, October 16th, at Manhattan’s Marriot Marquis Hotel. Highlighting the close of Hispanic Heritage Month, this family event will feature activities and giveaways including free health screenings, job opportunities, financial planning, and seminars.
“We are pleased to be participating in the upcoming 2005 Latino Expo,” said James Speyer, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of Clinical and Hospital Operations of the NYU Cancer Institute. “By creating a presence at the Expo, we hope to provide important health messages on issues of importance to New Yorkers, particularly the Latino community.” The event will also address diabetes, blood pressure, HIV, and other health issues affecting Hispanics.
Several keynote speakers at the conference will be available for interviews in both Spanish and English. They include Anna Ferrari, M.D., who will discuss the importance of getting screened for prostate cancer and understanding who is at risk for this disease; Cecilia Marcado, M.D., will outline new imaging technologies for mammography screening; Eduvigis Cruz-Arrieta, Ph.D., will explain the ways that living in an urban environment can effect Latinos’ mental and physical health. She will also offer many ideas for dealing with this physical, behavioral, and emotional stress.
In addition, keynote speaker Demetre C. Daskalis, M.D., will review the clinical manifestations of recent HIV infection and touch upon the disease’s immunology and epidemiology. He will also present First Call NYU, an innovative research endeavor to answer many questions about HIV infection.
