New York, NY, March 16, 2006 – Borrowing a little luck of the Irish, fourth-year medical students from NYU School of Medicine gathered for Match Day, a nationwide event that simultaneously reveals critical residency appointments for all graduating medical students across the country. A variety of striking views captured the excitement and high drama of the 151 students simultaneously opening their envelopes.

This is a defining moment in their professional live—a myriad of emotions were unveiled as these students learned where they will perform their residencies. According to Dr. Veronica Catanese, Senior Associate Dean for Education, “We know that we ‘import’ some of the brightest and most committed students in the country in our entering classes; each year, their extraordinary success in the matching process makes us confident that we, in fact, are ‘exporting,’ as well as keeping at our own institution, superb physicians that we, the medical community and, most of all, the public, will be proud."

Among the graduates, 26% matched residencies in Internal Medicine, 12% in Pediatrics, 9% in Surgery, 5% in Obstetrics and Gynecology, 5% in Psychiatry, 1% in Plastic Surgery.

“I believe this is the best match in the history of the school,” says Dr. Mariano Rey, Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs. While students will pursue training in 19 states across the nation, a majority of students will remain at NYU or other schools in New York City. Out of the 151 students, 60% remain in NY, with 42 of those students at NYU School of Medicine, 4% will go to California, 9% will go to Massachusetts, 5% Connecticut, 5% Pennsylvania 3%, Washington D.C. 1%, New Jersey 3%, and 7% other.

We congratulate all the extraordinary fourth-year students and wish them the best in their futures!
