Vein Center Opens At NYU Medical Center

NYU Vein Center is the first of its kind in Manhattan

New York, September 10, 2007 – Today, the NYU Vein Center—the first and only of its kind in Manhattan—will open its doors at NYU Medical Center.

“The diagnosis and treatment of venous disease is more than just a cosmetic issue. As part of an academic medical center, the NYU Vein Center provides an advanced level of patient care as well as state-of-the-art techniques of diagnosis and treatment,” notes Mark A. Adelman, MD, Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at NYU.

Lowell S. Kabnick, MD, an internationally recognized leader in the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of venous disorders, will be the Director of the NYU Vein Center.

According to Dr. Kabnick, “The NYU Vein Center will be an all inclusive diagnostic and treatment center for veins.”

Part of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, the NYU Vein Center offers exceptionally personalized patient care for the treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, venous ulcers, and other venous conditions. The surgeons in the Vein Center stress the minimally invasive approach to the diagnosis and treatment of vein abnormalities. All seven are board-certified vascular surgeons who, as part of the mission of academic medicine, are dedicated to improving the care of patients with venous disease through their clinical practices, research endeavors, and educational commitments. They are also called upon to teach their techniques to other surgeons around the world.

Varicose veins are the most common vein disease. They develop when the valves in the veins, which are designed to help blood flow back to the heart, become damaged or weak, resulting in a painful build-up of blood. Traditionally, varicose veins have been treated by surgically stripping the veins to repair the valvular function. The NYU Vein Center emphasizes a variety of minimally invasive techniques to relieve the painful symptoms of varicose veins, such as:

  • VenaCure® laser treatments to heat and seal the veins
  • Closure™ Procedure, which uses a catheter and radiofrequency energy to repair the veins
  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy, which involves removal of the veins through tiny incisions, performed on an outpatient basis
  • Sclerotherapy, a type of injection that repairs the damaged vein and restores proper circulation

The NYU Vein Center is located at NYU Medical Center:
