Residency and Fellowship Applicants
Is there a brochure with detailed information about the residency?
Detailed information about our residency program is available on our web site. We no longer print brochures.
When is the application deadline?
The deadline for application to the residency class entering NYU Department
of Dermatology in July 2007 is November 25, 2005.
How much does a first-year resident earn?
In 2005-2006, a first-year dermatology resident (PGY-2) at NYU earns
approximately $49,192 per year. A third-year resident (PGY-4) earns
approximately $56,395.
During the course of the residency period residents can be paid by either Bellevue Hospital or New York University Medical Center. The pay range is essentially the same for the two institutions, however there might be minor diferences in benefits.
How much time is spent at each of the three hospitals?
Residents' time is divided evenly between the dermatology units at Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital and the V.A.
Residents are organized into teams of six or seven residents per team; these teams spend four consecutive months at each hospital before rotating to the next site.
What is the call schedule like?
Each resident will be on call an average of once a week during 2nd
half of the first year and the first half of second year. Third-year
residents divide back-up call evenly among themselves.
How do NYU dermatology residents perform on the boards?
Our residents do extremely well on the boards and uniformly pass on the first attempt.
Is there an opportunity to participate in research?
The department's mentorship program pairs each second-year resident with a faculty member to work on an original research project that lasts through the remainder of the residency.
In the past, residents have been granted elective time to work on clinical and basic science research projects.
For those residents interested in an academic research career, the department's Sulzberger Fellowship allows for intense research time during the third year of residency.
How many residents are in the program?
There are six to seven residents per year. There will be seven residents
selected for the class entering 2007.
Are foreign medical graduates eligible for a dermatology residency at NYU?
Our department has accepted exceptional foreign applicants on rare occasions.
Are applicants who have completed a non-dermatology residency eligible for a dermatology residency at NYU?
In the past, our department has accepted outstanding residency candidates with prior non-dermatology training.
Is affordable housing available for residents?
Finding affordable housing in New York City can take time. The Off-Campus Housing Assistance Program (OCHAP) assists NYU Medical Center affiliates in their search for safe, affordable and high-quality off-campus rental housing within commuting distance of the medical center. The OCHAP web site is http://www.med.nyu.edu/ochap
Is moonlighting allowed?
With departmental approval, third-year residents may moonlight on weekends.
