How do I get into the facility?
NYU Medical Center ID cards must be coded in order to enter the
facility.
How do I locate missing animals?
Death - check cage cards for notations of death dates. If within
48 hours of death, carcasses are held in the freezer in the entrance
of the facility.
Misplaced - check adjacent cages for increase in population.
Escape - mice found will be placed in a separate cage on the bottom
of the rack, identified as an unknown mouse. They are kept for a
week to be claimed.
How do I get clean cages?
Supplies can be found in the hallway.
What do I do with dirty cages?
Dirty cages must be brought to room B10 cage wash area. Dirty cages
with biohazard contaminants must be wrapped in a red bag. Dirty cages
coming from labs are to be placed in a white bin outside of the facility
for autoclaving.
Where can I perform procedures in the facility?
Small procedures (injections, identifying, etc.) can be performed
in the animal rooms or in room B1.
What do I do with carcasses?
Animal carcasses should be placed in a plastic bag and deposited in
the freezer by the entrance of the facility for proper disposal. For
cages with the last animal in the cage, remember to deposit the card
in the cage card drop box located by room B1.
Where do I place the cage cards when cages are removed
from the facility?
Deposit the cage cards in the cage card drop box located by room
B1. Be sure to indicate the date the cage was removed. Write "RETURN"
on the back of the cards if you need the cage card back. The cards
can be retrieved in a few days and placed in a plastic bag labeled
"Stopped Census".
All cages consolidated to another cage for more than 24 hours must
submit the barcode number to the facility supervisor to stop or
start census.
