New Policies Regarding Overcrowded
Cages and Dead Animals,
Effective January 2005
Starting the year of 2005, in order to increase the
efficiency of Veterinary Services, we will no longer send
out notification by email or phone regarding overcrowded cages
or dead animals. It is thus highly suggested that appropriate
lab members come down to the holding rooms at least three
times a week to monitor the status of their animals. DLAR
permits five post-weaning mice per cage. Please check the
density standards listed on the back of the animal room doors
and click here
for details.
Dates of separation, flagged outside the cages, and
deaths of animals, posted inside the doors to the animal rooms,
should be duly noted. If animals are not separated by the
date specified, they will be automatically separated by the
vet tech and the lab will be charged $35.00 per new cage set-up.
Animal carcasses will be held for three days in the cold rooms
of the Berg, Skirball, Parasitology and Dental facilities
until they are disposed of by the DLAR staff. If a particular
investigator still wants to be notified about dead animals
by the vet tech, he or she can request this service for a
fee. Any lab that does want to be notified individually should
also hand the DLAR staff a current list of email addresses
of all the relevant post-docs or technicians.
Animal breeding cages should be designated with white
cards, and dates of breedings and births should be written
on the front of the cards. There should only be one male and
one female per breeding cage, and pups must be weaned by 21
days. If harem breeding (one male with two females), extended
weaning time or special considerations are required, protocols
must be amended justifying this action and submitted to the
IACUC coordinator. Any lab using harem breeding technique
will have to be extremely vigilant in monitoring the density
of their cages. Only all male or all female animals are permitted
in non-breeding cages, which should be designated by a yellow
card.
The above changes to our policies will allow the
veterinary and husbandry staffs to better attend to the health
and well being of the animals in our facilities. Specific
veterinary services can be requested for a fee, and principle
investigators should contact DLAR individually about their
needs.
