The Division of Facial Plastic Surgery of the Department of Otolaryngology prides itself in delivering cutting-edge techniques in all aspects of facial plastic and cosmetic surgery.
Faculty
The division is run by two full-time, academic surgeons double board-certified in Otolaryngology and in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Functional and Reconstructive Surgery
Nasal Surgery
Nasal obstruction often is due to weakness in the nasal sidewalls
and nasal tip. A deviated nasal septum can contribute to the obstruction.
Sometimes a broken nose can lead to new nasal obstruction as well
as new nasal deformity. Facial plastic surgery can correct many
of these problems, building strength and support into a weak, collapsing
tip and straightening the nose inside and out. Our surgeons collaborate
with the Division of Rhinology to address sinus problems simultaneously.
As a result, both functional and cosmetic problems are corrected
with only one surgery.
Facial Trauma
All types of facial soft tissue and bony injuries as a result
of motor vehicle accidents, assault, or expertly treated. The latest
reconstructive techniques are utilized, including artificial bone
and other new implants. The emphasis is to treat the injured area
as non-invasively as possible. When possible, endoscopic techniques
and hidden incision lines are utilized, allowing for more rapid
healing and less scarring.
Defects left after removing skin and other facial cancers
Working closely with dermatologic, head and neck, and general
surgeons, all types of soft tissue defects are repaired with an
emphasis to producing the best functional and cosmetic result possible.
Reconstructions range from minor scar revisions to reconstructions
of the entire nose.
Facial Paralysis and Spasm
Facial paralysis can be a devastating problem. It is caused
by trauma, other surgical procedures or Bell’s palsy. Our surgeons are experienced in nerve grafting,
facial slings to lift the weak portions of the face, and in the use of Botulinum
toxin (Botox) to reduce the spasm seen after nerve recovery. We work closely with
neurologists, skull base surgeons, head and neck surgeons, and rehabilitation physicians
to provide multidisciplinary care for these problems.
Congenital Malformations
Ear deformities from birth, Microtia, is a difficult problem for the child
and their family. Working with the ear surgeons in our department, we can construct
a new ear from rib cartilage, providing improved function and form.
Cosmetic Surgery
Nasal Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
Even when the nose works well, sometimes it just does not fit the face. It
may be too big, too small, too long, or too short. It can detract from the natural
beauty of the eyes or lips. Improving the shape of the nose so that other facial
features are enhanced, is a special expertise of our surgeons.
Facial Rejuvenation Surgery
Surgical procedures and techniques to help our patients look younger and
less tired is performed utilizing the latest minimally invasive and cutting-edge
techniques. Facelifts, eyelid lifts, forehead lifts, and neck liposuction are commonly
performed.
Cosmetic Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Children and adults alike can have ears that are too prominent. Utilizing
cartilage-sparing techniques, the ears can be safely and predictably reshaped to
make them appear more natural.
Noninvasive Techniques
Sometimes a deeper crease can be filled to make it look less obvious. Commonly
filled creases include the folds between the nose and mouth, and the marionette
lines that can turn down the corners of the mouth. Collagen, Cymetra, and
other fillers are used. Sometimes, a patient’s own fat can be transferred to these areas
for a longer-lasting result.
Botulinum toxin (Botox) has gained popularity in improving the appearance
of forehead lines and crows feet around the eyes. It is commonly used in these
areas for temporary (4 to 6 month) improvement.
Chemical peels and microdermabrasion techniques are employed by both the
physicians and their skin care specialists to improve wrinkling due to age and
excess sun exposure. We provide a full-service skin care program for all of our
patients, maximizing their improvements postoperatively as needed.
