Biosafety
This section provides information related
to working with potentially hazardous biological materials - including
infectious agents, blood, cells, tissue and toxins. In order to view information
on a specific topic, click on the topic in the table below.
If you don't find exactly what you are looking
for, please contact the Director responsible for the School of Medicine's
Biosafety Program, Jean
Goldberg, by e-mail with a brief
description of the information you are seeking.

Biosafety Cabinets
NYUMC Information
The Environmental Services Department
maintains a contract for the annual service and maintenance of all
biosafety cabinets at the Medical Center. If you have questions
about the contract, require non-routine service, want to incorporate
new equipment into the contract, or need help selecting appropriate
equipment, contact Jean
Goldberg by e-mail.

NYUMC Information
NYU School of Medicine has adopted
the CDC/NIH Publication Biosafety
in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories as its Biosafety
Manual.
Bloodborne Pathogens
There is an Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard that applies to personnel
who could be exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Information about the
OSHA standard is included in the Self-study
Package for Bloodborne Pathogens. You must complete this package
or equivalent training once each year if you work with the any of
the materials listed below:
- Human blood,
human blood components and products made from human blood
- Human cell
cultures
- Pathogenic
microorganisms that are transmitted by human blood and can cause
disease in humans. For example, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis
C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human T-lymphotropic
virus Type I, (HTLV-I), Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax
and Treponema pallidum.
- The following
human body fluids: semen, vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid,
synovial fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid,
amniotic fluid, saliva in dental procedures, any body fluid that
is visibly contaminated with blood, and all body fluids in situations
where it is difficult or impossible to differentiate between body
fluids;
- Any unfixed
cell, tissue or organ (other than intact skin) from a human (living
or dead);
- HIV-containing
cell or tissue cultures, organ cultures, and HIV- or HBV-containing
culture medium or other solutions
- Blood, organs
or other tissues from experimental animals infected with human pathogens
that could be transmitted by contact with blood

Select Agents
The Federal Government
requires registration for possession, use, and transfer of select
biological agents and toxins. The list of agents also gives information
on exemptions for toxins based on the quantity in possession.

Shipping and Receiving of Biological
Materials
NYUMC Information
If you intend to ship or receive infectious
materials, federal regulations require that you receive proper training
in advance. (Penalties for non-compliance with these regulations
are severe.) If you ship or receive infectious materials on a regular
basis, you must also attend refresher training every 2 years. You
can meet the training requirement by completing the Self
Study on Shipping and Receiving Biological Materials and forwarding
the Post Test to
Environmental Services.
