12/28/2001 - January Training Sessions

We anticipate that representatives of the EPA will begin their inspection at the medical center within the next few months. When they do, will be reviewing records for Chemical Hygiene and Chemical Waste training. Environmental Services (ES) is offering both courses on January 10th in the Skirball 4th Floor Seminar Room. Chemical Hygiene training begins at 2 pm and Chemical Waste training at 3:15 pm. If there are personnel working in your lab who need training (see below), please send them to one or both sessions. If you have questions, please contact Christine Lema-Foley or Vinita Kumar at x35159.

Chemical Hygiene Training focuses on how to obtain and interpret information on hazardous chemicals; how to label, store and handle them properly; how to minimize chemical exposures; and how to respond to emergencies. All lab personnel who work with chemicals must receive this training. Up until recently, ES only offered the course as a self-study module. However, in order to provide lab personnel with the most current information regarding the EPA's expectations, we recently scheduled one-hour sessions with several departments. Personnel who did not attend one of the departmental sessions should attend the first part of the January 10th session.

Chemical Waste Training focuses on how to identify hazardous chemical waste, and how to collect, label, store, transport and discard it properly. Everyone who generates or handles chemical waste must receive ANNUAL training. Personnel who have not attended Chemical Waste training since last February should attend the second part of the January 10th session.
