Clinical Fellowship
Under the direction of Dr. Patrick J. Lamparello, two residents are
selected each year for a two-year training program in the
specialty of vascular surgery. The highly regarded vascular surgical residency
program provides training for residents in all aspects of vascular and endovascular
surgery for ensuring the highest quality of care for patients
with vascular illnesses. NYU maintains an environment suitable to host academic
activities for medical education and scientific research. Rotations occur
on the clinical surgical services of the various hospitals that comprise
NYU Medical Center. Rotations are also present in endovascular interventions
and the vascular laboratory. The latter is a three month
rotation ensuring that the resident will be successful in acquiring certification
for the vascular laboratory.
The vascular fellows rotate in three-month blocks
to Tisch, Bellevue, and the VA Hospitals. At Tisch, the resident supervises
the Vascular Surgical Service, with patients directly under his/her care.
Here the fellow will scrub on the more difficult and complicated
vascular cases as well as directly oversee general surgical residents,
medical students, and nurse practitioners on this large and busy
academic service. All aspects of vascular disease are encountered, including
arterial, venous, and lymphatic disorders. Extensive outpatient experience
is gained in the eight member surgical faculty's vascular clinics. NYU
has a very active day surgery center. We perform many vein procedures per
year. The vascular surgical service performs all of its diagnostic
angiograms and all of its therapeutic endovascular interventions, including
a large experience in abdominal aortic aneurysms.
At Bellevue and the VA Hospitals, the fellows act as a junior consultant
for the vascular surgical services and trauma services. They are provided
with a significant portion of time for independent reading, research
and conference preparation. The Vascular Resident is present daily in
the vascular laboratories and clinics and obtains extensive outpatient
experience.
On completing the certified vascular residency at NYU, it is expected
that the vascular fellow will achieve board certification. The vascular
resident is required to present his research at the Eastern Vascular
Fellows Meeting held in the spring in New York. Most of the fellows present
at other national vascular meetings as well. Over the decades the graduates
of NYU have gained leadership positions throughout North America and
received numerous awards. All regulations regarding resident work hours
are observed.
