Unique in its service to both NYU Langone Medical Center and the Hospital for Joint
Diseases Orthopaedic Institute (a specialty hospital with expertise in several
fields, including orthopedics and rheumatology), the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery is one of the largest and most distinguished programs of its kind
in the country. The department provides its patients with an unsurpassed
array of treatment options at a number of sites in the Greater New York metropolitan
area.
Its orthopedic surgeons are known as much for their compassion as for their
superior knowledge of the latest technologies and procedures. In addition
to clinical care, these physicians are in the forefront of education and
research in their respective areas. The proud departmental history upon which
they build includes the first research on arthroscopic techniques in the
nation, the development of orthopedic procedures for treating polio and congenital
deformities in children, and the establishment of the first biomechanics
laboratory in the United States. Among the subspecialties that make up the
department are:
Sports Medicine
More than 3,000 procedures a year are performed by the Sports Medicine Service,
including arthroscopic procedures on the knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle.
Covering numerous athletic events, staff from the department are the official
team physicians of the New York Mets major league baseball team.
Spine
The department established the Spine Center in 1997, a multidisciplinary
program that provides comprehensive care for all spinal disorders. The
Center is a founding member of the National Spine Network, a select group
of centers that specialize in spine care and research.
Pediatrics
The department's Center for Children is a major regional referral center
that provides comprehensive pediatric care for patients with a wide range
of orthopedic conditions, including fractures, sports injuries, cerebral
palsy, spina bifida, clubfoot, and arthogryposis.
Adult Reconstruction
More than 1,500 joint replacement procedures are performed each year by this
service, including primary hip and knee replacements, as well as complex
revision hip and knee reconstructions.
Hand
The Hand Service is one of the largest in the United States, with physicians
performing more than 3,500 procedures a year. The service provides care
for patients with problems involving the upper extremities, including acute
traumatic injuries, arthritic deformities, congenital anomalies, and neuromuscular
disorders.
Shoulder
The five subspecialists in the department's Shoulder Service treat the entire
spectrum of shoulder disorders and injuries. The service is recognized
nationally as a leader in education and research.
Oncology
The department's Orthopaedic Oncology Service is a major referral center
in the tri-state area for bone and soft tissue tumors.
