Requirements for Acceptance to fellowship (including
application deadline date):
Candidates for the fellowship program must have
completed plastic surgery training in an approved program in the
United States or have had comparable training and experience in
a foreign hospital. Applications should be received no later than
September 15 prior to the start of the fellowship. Dr. McCarthy
will review them, and invite various candidates to spend a day at
the Institute interviewing with him and members of the Craniofacial

Description of Fellowship (including starting
dates)
The fellowship is a one year commitment beginning
July 1st of each year and is structured around the Variety Center
for Craniofacial Rehabilitation, a multidisciplinary group designed
for the study and treatment of severe facial malformations. The
fellow receives in-depth training in the full spectrum of craniofacial
surgery. Working with a full-time orthodontist, the fellow is intimately
involved in the preoperative analysis and surgical planning as well
as splint construction for orthognathic surgery. A broad range of
research activities exist and the fellow is required to participate.
Both private and clinic cases are treated.
Responsibilities of Fellows:
The fellowship is oriented toward the acquisition
of technical skills required in craniofacial surgery and the preoperative
planning. The fellow presents all patients at the weekly craniofacial
conference and scrubs on the craniofacial cases in the O.R. Ample
time is allocated to assist the residents on surgical cases at Bellevue
Hospital under the supervision of an attending. Investigative projects
are required.
Other Related Activities:
Fellows attend all conferences at the Institute.
Research Activities:
Fellows are required to undertake clinical or
laboratory investigative projects.

Malpractice Requirements:
Fellows are covered for malpractice and are included
in group life insurance, medical insurance and disability.
State Licensure Requirements:
Candidates must have a New York License, or Limited
