Summary:
The NYU Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery offers
a one year fellowship in microsurgery and reconstruction,
commencing July. Training is based at three distinct
hospital centers, each providing a unique range of reconstructive
challenges. The caseload exceeds 100 free flaps
per year and is complemented by extensive extremity replantation/revascularization
opportunities. The experience is truly comprehensive
with an outstanding combination of case variety, patient
diversity, faculty interaction, clinical independence,
and research opportunities. The stipend, depending
on prior training, is at the PGY-8 level and housing assistance
is available.

Requirements for Acceptance to Fellowship:
Candidates for the Fellowship Program must have completed
plastic surgery training in an approved program in the
United States or have had comparable training and experience
in foreign hospitals. Applications should be requested
9 - 12 months prior to the start of the fellowship.
Description of Fellowship:
Fellows begin rapidly assisting and performing microsurgical
and reconstructive procedures under attending supervision.
During the year, the trainee becomes experienced with clinical
microvascular transplantation, replantation surgery, surgery
of the peripheral nerves, and routine reconstruction. This
includes facial microvascular free flap restoration. The
fellows also have the opportunity for clinical research
and laboratory research. The fellows are based at both
the Tisch Hospital and Bellevue Hospital for clinical duties.
The Research Lab, under the direction of Dr. Levine, is
located in the Rusk Institute.
Length of Training Rotation:
Appointments are for 12 months and follow the academic calendar
extending from July 1st through June 30th of the following
year.
Fellowship Responsibilities:
The fellows’ responsibilities include involvement in
the planning and execution of a wide variety of microsurgical
and reconstructive procedures, and replantation/revascularization
surgery. Resident interaction varies per institution
Other Related Activities:
Fellows participate in Bellevue rounds, monthly Indications/M&M
conference, Grand Rounds (weekly), Facial Paralysis conference
(monthly), Peripheral Nerve conference (Monthy), Vascular
Anomalies conferences, and all other teaching conferences.
Research Activities:
Fellows are required to undertake clinical research projects
including abstract submission to two meetings per year
(ASRM mandatory). Presentations at national meetings
are subsidized.
Basic science research projects and laboratory facilities
are available.

Benefits: Fellows are covered for malpractice
and are included in group life insurance, medical insurance

State Licensure Requirements:
Candidates must have a New York License, or Limited Permit
and hold a current ECFMG Certificate.
