Dr. Nirav Shah, MD, MPH selected for the Robert Wood Johnson Physician Faculty Scholars Program

Nirav Shah, M.D., M.P.H.

Nirav Shah, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine, has been selected for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program Class of 2010.

Dr. Shah is one of 15 recipients who will receive an award of $300,000. His research project, "Outpatient Cardiovascular Guidelines Applied in Practice (GAP)," centers on the efficient and effective delivery of preventive care. This program implements national hypertension and cholesterol guidelines (JNC 7 and ATP III) for eligible patients, integrating population-based screening with care management and customized clinical decision support. By utilizing seamless background processes within electronic health records, physicians can provide evidence-based care without disrupting established workflows, and patients can receive care tailored to their needs and preferences. This initiative will be developed initially in the Geisinger Health System before being implemented and evaluated in the more diverse New York University/Bellevue patient population.

“With widespread adoption of electronic health records in the coming years, the Outpatient GAP study will provide an important test of a promising model for delivering effective preventive care,” said Dr. Shah.

Dr. Shah cares for patients at Bellevue and conducts research that combines information technology and new ways to improve care for vulnerable populations in two settings: the public hospital system of New York City and the rural, aging population of eastern Pennsylvania's Geisinger Health System. Dr. Shah's early work was also funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with a grant from the Health e-Technologies Initiative where he examined an internet-delivered self- management program for patients with chronic disease.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program is designed to strengthen the leadership and academic productivity of junior medical school faculty dedicated to improving health and health care. For more information, please visit http://rwjfpfsp.stanford.edu.
