Letter from the Director

Joel D. Ernst, M.D.
Director, NYU Division of Infectious
Diseases and Immunology
Infectious diseases are increasingly recognized as important problems for individual patients, specific populations, and society at large. Emerging new infections, re-emergence of 'old' infections, the worldwide HIV pandemic, the potential of an influenza pandemic, and increasing antibiotic resistance, all demand innovative and aggressive responses.

The NYU Division of Infectious Diseases offers expertise in patient care, research, and education and training to confront and prepare the next generation of experts to solve these and problems of the future.

The incorporation of Tisch Hospital in the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program has been a significant milestone for us. We have increased the number of fellows to four a year and have extended their training to a different kind of hospital.

Having the program span three different healthcare delivery systems – at Bellevue, the VA, and now at Tisch – means that we see the whole spectrum of infectious diseases. There are not many programs in the country with the diversity of patients and problems we see here.
