8 East/West - Labor & Delivery / Ante Partum Unit

  • The Unit consists of:
    • 8 West - 10 LDRS, 3 Triage
    • 8 East - 4 Ante Partum Observation Rooms, 3 Operating Rooms, 3 PACU, 1 Admit Room
  • The Labor and Delivery Nurses provide care to over 4,000 patients annually, including:
    • Ante Partum High Risk patients.
    • Laboring patients and their partners.
    • Patents undergoing Cesarean Section and other minor obstetrical procedures.
    • Immediate care of Post Partum and PACU patients.
    • Newborn care with in the first 2 hours of life.
    • Patient undergoing pregnancy loss and bereavement.
  • The Nursing staff is a diverse group of very experienced and new grads.
    • The RNs play an important role in creating the protocols and standards that are evidenced based.
    • All RNs are involved in Quality Improvement, through peer audits. 
    • Our unit won the house-wide Q&PI award during Nursing Week 2007.
    • Continuing education is important; we provide certification in electronic fetal monitoring, NALS, and BLS.
    • Several of our RNs are certified and many are pursuing graduate study.
    • A power-point presentation developed by members of the nursing staff was adopted as template for Magnet Status Review Team.
  • RN orientation consist of 12 weeks classes and clinical orientation with preceptor for new grads, and 8 weeks for experienced staff. Examples of classes include fetal monitoring, newborn assessment, and breast-feeding. Education is on going, with classes on ante-partum care and obstetrical emergencies offered periodically throughout the year.
  • A perinatal clinical information system known as Centricity perinatal (formerly QS) supports efficient documentation of mother throughout and delivery process, as well as central fetal surveillance. Staff enters and access patient data quickly and easily right at the point of care
