1st-2nd Year Medical Students

Clinical Team Position

For any given Saturday, there are five clinical teams seeing patients. Each clinical team is composed of one clinical student (MSIII or MSIV) who has completed the Medicine clerkship and one pre-clinical student (MSI or MSII). You will see an average of three to four patients per clinic session. The clinical student will serve as your mentor to teach you how to take a history and do a physical examination. The pre-clinical student is not obligated to do any part of the interview or exam, but may do as much or as little depending on his or her comfort level.

The pre-clinical student is required to bring a small 3x5 inch notebook to keep notes regarding the patients they see in the format of a patient write-up. The clinical student may help guide the pre-clinical student in terms of organization and key information to be documented, however this is meant to be an independent exercise.  At the end of the day, the pre-clinical student can debrief with the clinical student regarding their patients. If there is an interesting topic encountered during a patient's visit that the pre-clinical student would like to learn more about, then the pre-clinical student is responsible for notifying the Clinic Coordinator (MSIV) for the day. A didactic/case presentation will be prepared by one of the clinical students on this topic for two weeks later.
