Specialized Clinical Care

Clinical Care Centers in the NYU Clinical Cancer Center advance the care of patients with the most common types of cancer, including those of the breast and reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary system (such as prostate cancer), nervous system (including brain cancer), lung, and head and neck, as well as melanoma and hematologic cancers.

Prompt Screening and Diagnosis

Advanced imaging procedures and other diagnostic tests are performed to detect cancer. Radiologists and pathologists located onsite ensure prompt evaluation of imaging films and test results. This convenient, team-oriented approach makes possible a timely diagnosis and, if necessary, immediate referral to the appropriate cancer specialists.

A Patient-Focused Treatment Setting

For patients receiving infusion, injection, and/or transfusion services, private treatment areas with television, telephone, and visitor space have been designed to maximize privacy, safety, and comfort.

Radiation Therapy Onsite

A Radiation Treatment Center located within the NYU Clinical Cancer Center facilitates the delivery of combination chemo-radiation therapy, eliminating the need for patients to travel between the Clinical Cancer Center and other areas of NYU Medical Center. This feature makes the NYU Cancer Institute the only NCI-designated cancer center in New York City to offer radiation therapy in a freestanding outpatient facility.

Center for Women's Cancers

The Center for Women's Cancers meets both the medical and nonmedical needs of patients with breast and gynecological cancers. It includes:

  • A dedicated Imaging Center, where radiological procedures such as mammography, ultrasound, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy speed the diagnosis of these cancers.
  • A Breast Cancer Care Center, which delivers all the services a woman with breast cancer needs. For example, a woman with a known breast health problem, or one who suspects she may have a problem, can come in for a scheduled mammogram, meet with a breast surgeon if necessary for further diagnostic testing, have a biopsy onsite (with a pathologist readily available to report on the findings), and then speak with a team of cancer specialists - all on the same day and in the same facility. Whenever possible, the goal is for a woman to learn within 24 hours of being seen by a breast cancer specialist whether she has breast cancer - and the healthcare team in the NYU Clinical Cancer Center's Breast Cancer Care Center stands ready to make this goal a reality.
  • A Gynecological Cancer Care Center, providing care for patients with or at risk for cancers of the ovary, uterus (endometrium), and cervix. At the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Foundation Gynecological Cancer Care Center, a woman can have initial diagnostic tests, examinations, and consultations with dedicated gynecologic specialists, all in the same facility.
  • A Boutique, which offers goods and services for patients who have had breast surgery as well as those undergoing chemotherapy.

Support for Mind and Spirit

Although cancer strikes the body first, inevitably the mind and soul are affected as well. That's why we offer a variety of support services for patients and their families including supportive counseling, symptom management, and nutritional counseling. . Links to a variety of support groups and complementary therapies are available as well.

Knowledge Is Power

A Cancer Education and Resource Center is conveniently located on the ground floor, where patients and family members can easily access it upon entering or leaving the facility. The Cancer Education and Resource Center also houses computers to provide Internet access to educational materials from the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and other resources.

A Hub of Research and Education

The Clinical Cancer Center also enables the NYU Cancer Institute to continue meeting two other important goals of its mission - research and education. Having all cancer professionals headquartered in one location makes it easier to collect and analyze data needed to help   patients being treated as part of clinical trials. And programs training the healthcare professionals of the future have a home at the facility as well, particularly the education of radiation oncologists.
