Facilities

The Rusk Institute is a 6 story building with an adjoining 8 story research building. Patients are examined both in their rooms and in the therapy areas where there is ample space and assistive devices to perform a full functional evaluation. Inpatient therapy areas are located on the 3rd and 4th floors of Rusk Institute. On each floor there is a large Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy gym with all necessary functional equipment, mat areas, parallel bars etc. Speech therapy is located in the 3rd floor of the research wing, Swallowing Disorders Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Rusk building and psychology is located on 2nd and 5th floors of both the Rusk and research buildings. Standard sized examining and therapy rooms are available for these services.

Cardiac and Pulmonary outpatient and inpatient therapy areas are located on the 9th floor of the Health Care Center building. There is a large gym with standard aerobic equipment, free weights and telemetry monitors. Patient rooms are also used for examining areas and for individual bedside treatment sessions. There is a conference room where patient education and weekly evaluation conferences are held. There is another smaller office equipped with computer and internet access for patients.

Outpatient Physical and Hand Therapy departments are located on the first floor of Rusk Institute. Physical Therapy area is divided into private treatment areas and an open plan gym with standard equipment. The hand therapy area is a large office with treatment areas, equipment and work spaces. Outpatient Occupational therapy is located on the 3rd floor of the Rusk building and comprises a large open planned area with necessary functional equipment, as well as barrier-free design area.

The Electrodiagnostic Laboratory is located on the 2nd floor of the research wing. It comprises two large offices for consultations and 3 rooms for physical and electrodiagnostic examinations.

The remaining space of the research wing houses offices and laboratories as well as facilities for clinics, examining rooms and adult inpatient beds.

A 35 bed pediatric rehabilitation floor is on the 5th floor with geographically contiguous therapy areas in each of the major rehabilitation disciplines. Additionally, the following facilities are part of pediatric rehabilitation service: inpatient early intervention and preschool program, computer classroom, recreation room, adaptive playground, sensory integration gymnasium, infant therapy rooms.

The Bellevue Rehabilitation Medicine Department is located on the sixth floor at 28th Street and First Avenue and is in a hospital that is a level 1 trauma center. The Rehab Dept is in the “New Bellevue” part of Bellevue Hospital Center. There are large and well equipped therapy areas, including occupational therapy and physical therapy with a large hydrotherapy unit and also a large modalities room. There is also a large hand therapy room. All of these areas are fully equipped. The EMG area has three EMG units. Two patients at a time can be examined or interviewed simultaneously in this area. There is a physician’s work area adjacent to each of the two in-patient units. Additionally, there is a resident on-call room and a resident’s office. The patients’ rooms themselves as well as clinic areas are quite spacious and provide appropriate privacy for patient examination.

In addition to the above, the Bellevue Hospital Medical Library is open daily as is the NYU Medical Center Library is.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service facilities of the New York campus of the VA NY Harbor HS consists of 11 designated contiguous inpatient beds associated with a dining room, six outpatient examination rooms and one dedicated electrodiagnostic examination room. There are 2 physical therapy gyms (one main gym and one satellite clinic), an occupational therapy clinic, two kinesiotherapy clinics (one for general treatment and one designated for an outpatient multiple sclerosis program), an independent living apartment, a bathroom ADL (Activities of Daily Living) room and a kitchen ADL training room. All rooms are ADA accessible. The VA-NY Harbor Healthcare System provides excellent facilities for the resident physicians. The clinic areas are contiguous with the therapy areas optimizing interactions among professional staff as well as patients. For duration of the three months rotation, each resident physician is assigned an office in clinic with a private patient examination table and computer terminal with access to medical references and the vast VA references as well as the internet. Residents are able to self -study and read when not interacting with patients (i.e. while on call) in these rooms. The electromyography laboratory is located in the same clinical area and is quite private for interaction with the EMG attending as well as the patient.

The facilities at the Brooklyn campus of VA NY Harbor HS consist of three outpatient examination rooms, one of which is used to perform electrodiagnostic studies, a conference room, a physical therapy clinic, an occupational therapy clinic including a kitchen and bathroom ADL room, and a kinesiotherapy clinic. All are ADA accessible.

At the Orthopaedic Institute the inpatient rehabilitation areas are on the 8th and 9th floors at 17th Street and Second Avenue and is regarded as a leading institute for the treatment and rehabilitation from bone and joint diseases.
