Prerequisites:
Applicants are expected to have successfully completed a diagnostic radiology residency, have taken the oral examination of the American Board of Radiology and BE LICENSED TO PRACTICE MEDICINE IN NEW YORK STATE.
Overview:
New York University Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital offers a one-year Women’s Imaging Fellowship. The fellowship consists of 6 months of breast imaging and 6 months of cross sectional imaging, with an emphasis on Women’s Imaging.
During the breast imaging block, the fellow will participate in all aspects of breast imaging, including screening and diagnostic mammography (analog and digital), ultrasound, MRI and image guided procedures. A full one-year Mammography Fellowship is also offered as a separate fellowship. Further details about the breast imaging program at NYU are described in the Mammography Fellowship web site.
During the cross-sectional imaging block, the fellow will rotate through the ultrasound, CT and MRI divisions. The fellowship generally consists of one month of body CT at Bellevue Hospital, one month of body MRI at Tisch Hospital and 3 months of ultrasound at both Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals. The sixth month is considered an elective month during which the fellow may choose to spend additional time in any of these clinical areas, depending on individual interests. One month of the ultrasound block is spent in the Perinatal Diagnostic Ultrasound Unit at Bellevue Hospital. This is an ultrasound unit devoted entirely to obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound and is staffed by faculty from both the radiology and OB/GYN departments. During this rotation, the fellow gains extensive experience in ultrasound evaluation of both normal and abnormal pregnancy. The fellow also has the opportunity to participate in procedures such as sonohysterography. During the MRI rotation, the Women’s Imaging fellow will be involved in all gynecologic and obstetric MR exams.
Call:
The Women’s Imaging fellow takes one call per month during each of the 6 months on the cross sectional imaging block. This call will be at Bellevue performing CT and US and also covering US at Tisch. While on call, 24/7 attending back-up is always available.
Research:
Participation in research is strongly encouraged but is not mandatory. There are many opportunities to participate in a research project in either the Breast Imaging or Body Imaging divisions. If the fellow submits an abstract accepted for presentation at a major scientific meeting, the expenses for the meeting will be subsidized by the department.
Teaching:
The fellow will be encouraged to participate in both resident and medical student teaching.
