Survey meter calibration, sealed source checks, bioassay, equipment evaluation
and other technical services
Survey meters must be registered with the Radiation Safety Office and will then be calibrated at prescribed intervals. Users are responsible for bringing meters to the designated location for calibration, and for retrieving them subsequently. Sealed sources of radioactive materials must be approved by the Radiation Safety Officer and are then maintained on an inventory and compliance measurements such as leak checks and survey measurements are then performed as required. Periodic bioassay measurements, such as measurement of thyroid burden, will be scheduled for users based on their pattern of use of volatile radioisotopes. Analysis of urine or other samples may also be performed when necessary. The Department must review and will design shielding for rooms where radioactive materials or machine sources are used. It will perform radiation surveys and evaluate safety as necessary and on request. The Department performs commissioning measurement to ensure safety and image quality for all new diagnostic X-ray equipment used for clinical purposes, and maintains a schedule of compliance testing thereafter.
