Title: Advanced Medicine
Preceptor: Michael LoCurcio, M.D.
Course Code: 04-25
Prerequisites: Only students who are in the final academic year of training and have successfully completed a clerkship in general internal medicine may participate in this elective.
Description: In Advanced Medicine students are expected to perform as acting interns on one of the medical services within the NYU School of Medicine Campus. In no other clerkship are students asked to assume more responsibility. In this clerkship, students must build upon their developing clinical skills in a setting of responsibility and exposure to real-life stressors. The clerkship attempts to create a balance between supervision and autonomy that is uniquely conducive to the maturation of clinicians.
Objectives of the Elective:
This elective strives to make each student better prepared for any residency training program. With the same responsibilities and expectations as our residency training program, students must learn to care for their patient in every sense of the word. At the end of the elective students are expected to be able to manage up to six complex medical cases and to be a part of housestaff team in an academic center.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Students will take call with the medical team and care for patients from admission through discharge under the supervision of a resident and faculty member
- Students will carry a pager and will be the first clinician called for any patient being covered by the team
- Students will present cases during attending rounds and, if required, for other academic conferences. Students will also be expected to perform all of the responsibilities required of interns in training including pre-rounding, participating in work rounds, note writing, and coordinating every aspect of care
Didactic Program:
Students attend all conferences attended by interns. These include morning report, noon conference, attending rounds and other special didactic sessions that are posted in each hospital every week.
Method of Evaluation:
The Course Director will assign a grade based on the evaluations by both housestaff and faculty<.
Requirements, Paperwork, Contact Information and Scheduling Information:
Months Offered: All Year
Duration: Four Weeks (including all four weekends and any Holiday that may occur during the elective time)
Students should download and complete the top portion of the elective form located on this website. The student should then request that his or her medical school completes the second section as indicated on the form. The original form must then be mailed to Stacy Bodziak (see address below). The Clerkship and the Residency Training Program will then review the application and consider the request based on availability and credentials. The student will be informed of the status of his or her request within four weeks of our receipt of the original request.
Please note that a student attending a medical school outside of the United States should visit the following: www.med.nyu.edu/registrar/electives/requirements_non_lcme.html for specific information regarding deadlines and applications.

Preceptor:
Norma Keller, M.D.
Prerequisites: Medicine Clerkship
Course Code: 04-05
Coordinator/Contact: Grace Ramirez-Maldonado
Telephone #: 263-6554
Description:
The standard elective in cardiology is carefully planned and centered at Bellevue Hospital. The students work with the Fellow on the busy Consultation Service. Formal discussions are held daily with Attending Physicians assigned to the CCU or Consult Service to discuss specific clinical problems in depth. The students attend the weekly Cardiology Clinic in the OPD and participate in all of the many teaching conferences of the Section.
Selected areasof concentration may be chosen by the student during the standard elective. These can be echocardiography, exercise testing, EKG review and Holter monitoring, cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology. The student may arrange special electives limited to any of these areas with specific faculty members with the approval by Dr. Keller or coordinator.
Objectives of the Elective
This elective is designed to expand the knowledge of the student in the diagnosis, pathophysiology and clinical management of cardiac disease. We show the student how cardiologists function as consultants to other internists and as primary physicians. We teach the students how to reach accurate diagnoses by correlating clinical data with information obtained by the many specialized techniques unique to cardiology.
Key Responsibilities of the Student While On Elective:
The students will be assigned to the Cardiology Consult Service at Bellevue, working closely with the Fellow assigned to consult, and presenting cases to the attending cardiologist daily. Students will become fully aware of the patients problems and will participate in their daily management. The students will be responsible for presenting patient problems to the Attending Physician in a precise, candid format. They will become familiar with the principal journals and textbooks used by cardiologists and will accompany their patients to diagnostic testing via cardiac catheterization, echocardiography and exercise stress testing with nuclear imaging.

Description:
Under supervision, the student participates in all activities involving electrocardiography The ECG elective starts at 8:30am and generally lasts until the early afternoon. The ECG elective is designed to teach advanced interpretation of the electrocardiogram, with a specific emphasis on cardiac arrhythmia. Medical students are expected to come in with a basic understanding of the principles of electrocardiography. Medical students will interpret all of the day's ECGs, which will then be reviewed and verified by the attending. There will be a review of interesting ECGs each day with the attending. There will be ample opportunity for the students to ask any questions regarding specific ECGs or principles of electrocardiography. We will also review legendary ECGs which have been saved for specific teaching points. There is an expectation that the student will read at least one ECG textbook (preferably not Dubin) during the elective. A review of specific subjects such as myocardial ischemia and infarction, Brugada syndrome, WPW, SVT, ventricular tachycardia, AV block, electrolyte abnormalities, pacemakers, biventricular pacemakers and ICDs will be discussed.
The class coincides with the ECG elective for internal medicine house staff.
For satisfactory completion of this elective the student is required to be present on at least three quarters of the teaching days. Students who schedule large numbers of internship interviews are advised not to take this elective during those months.
