Title: Clinical
Neurology Subinternship or Consult Elective

Description:
A four week elective is available in Clinical Neurology
at Bellevue Hospital. Students may choose between experience on the inpatient
consultation service or as a subintern on the neurology ward. The elective
in intended to give medical students an opportunity to build on the skills
developed in the core Neurology Clerkship. The emphasis is on neurological
localization, diagnosis and management. The student will have a primary assignment
on an inpatient unit as well as one regular clinic per week. They will also
have an opportunity to attend subspecialty clinics in Epilepsy, Behavioral
Neurology, Movement Disorders, Headache and Multiple Sclerosis.
Objectives of the Elective:
The student will participate as an integral
member of the neurology team. This involvement allows the students to: (1)
build on their basic science and clerkship experience in terms of knowledge
and physical examination skills; (2) expand their skills in ambulatory neurology,
with an emphasis on neurological problems which they will encounter throughout
their career, regardless of specialty; (3) gain knowledge regarding newer treatment
modalities and research in the field; (4) explore the option of neurology as
a career choice; (5) learn more about sub specialization in neurology.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Function as an integral member of the inpatient neurology team (ward or
consults)
- Independently assess patients, present their findings, and begin a plan
of care under the supervision of senior residents and attendings.
- Appropriately follow and document their patients' progress.
- Presentation of the neurological patient and demonstration of the neurological
examination.
- Appropriate application of neurological and neurophysiological techniques.
- Take evening and night call at reasonable intervals, under the supervision
of resident staff.
- Attend assigned clinics.
- Attend and participate in the Department's grand rounds, journal club,
neuropathology and neuroradiology lectures, and other regularly scheduled
conferences
Didactic Program:
The student will get "hands on" experience
with the neurological examination and lumbar punctures. Participation in daily
attending and resident work rounds will provide the student with a broad exposure
to neurological diseases and management. In clinic, attendings review all patients
seen by the student, go over the neurological exam and assist the student in
developing a plan of care. The Department has two Academic Days per week with
scheduled conferences, journal clubs and grand rounds. These sessions are a
rich source of the latest treatments and approaches to the neurological patient.
Students are also encouraged to read texts and the current literature and present
topics during didactic sessions with the ward attending.
Method of Evaluation:
The student will be evaluated by
the ward resident, ward attending and clinic attending.

Title: Epilepsy Clinical Clerkship

Description:
Student will work with the clinical epilepsy/neurophysiology
service at the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Activities
will include ward rounds on the clinical epilepsy service, evaluation of outpatients
with epilepsy, introduction to electroencephalography, review of video-EEG
recorded seizures, intraoperative mapping of seizure foci and brain stimulation
to determine language and motor areas, and intracarotid sodium amytal testing
to determine dominance of language and memory functions.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students will gain knowledge of differing seizure types, their causation
and treatment with antiepileptic medication and/or surgery. Students will obtain
preliminary knowledge regarding EEG interpretations.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- To attend morning attending rounds, follow patients along with the ward
team and write progress notes.
- To attend EEG reading and epilepsy surgery conference.
- To attend epilepsy clinic with residents and attendings.
Didactic Program:
There will be a series of lectures by attendings
and/or fellows on seizure classification, antiepileptic medications and surgical
treatment.
Method of Evaluation:
Evaluation is based on input from fellows/attendings
involved with the student.

Title: Clinical Epilepsy &
Neurophysiology Service Research

Description:
Research projects include a broad spectrum of topics; clinical epileptology,
behavioral neurology, and clinical neurophysiology. Students will be expected
to work on an independent project and to write a paper summarizing their work
at the completion of the project. Specific areas include: lateralizing and
localizing features of partial seizures, electrographic patterns of partial
seizures
with depth electrodes, personality changes, depression and anxiety in patients
with epilepsy, and cardiac changes during seizures.
Objectives of the Elective:
Students should gain knowledge of clinical epilepsy, including exposure to surgical
management of epilepsy, drug treatment, diagnosis and EEG.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- To attend daily ward and EEG rounds.
- To attend daily video and EEG conferences.
- To attend weekly surgical case conferences.

Title: Pediatric Neurology

Description:
Students are exposed to a wide variety of clinical material during their elective period. This includes three clinics per week at Bellevue Hospital, in-patient service at Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals and evaluation of patients at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Objectives of the Elective
The student should understand the developing nature of the brain in the pediatric age group and how this affects neurologic functions both in health and disease. The student should understand the major issues in pediatric neurology (mental retardation, learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, seizures, neurogenetics, etc.) and how these differ from adult neurology. The student should understand how to work-up and manage a child with neurologic complaints.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
- Attend three clinics per week at Bellevue and see patients under the supervision of an Attending.
- See all patients on the ward with the pediatric neurology resident.
- Attend all ward rounds with the attending and be prepared to discuss issues relevant to those patients.
- Attend pediatric and adult neurology conferences. The student may be asked to present a case.

Title: Neuropsychiatry/Behavioral Neurology

Description:
The student will rotate through several different clinics that offer clinical and supervisory experience in areas of neurpsychiatry. These will include, but not be limited to the epilepsy clinic, the behavioral neurology clinic, and the adult ADHD clinic. In addition, the elective student will spend time in the psychiatric emergency room of Bellevue Hospital, will attend regularly scheduled neurology and psychiatry lectures, and may arrange to obseerve neuropsychological testing, including WADA testing.
Objectives of the Elective
- The student will strengthen and consolidate clinical skills of psychiatry and neurology by working in clinical settings that require knowledge of both.
- The student will better understand the separate but overlapping domains of psychiatry and neurology.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective:
In the clinics and the emergency room, the student will evaluate patients under the supervision of an attending or resident, and will present patients to the attending or at team conferences. He or she may be asked to write chart notes and case summaries, which will be read and approved by an attending or resident
Didactic Program:
- Supervision, and discussion of assigned readings with the elective preceptor
- Attendance at the PGY-II psychiatry lectures.
- Attendance and participation at the medical student neurology lectures.
- Attendance at psychiatry and neurology grand rounds.
Method of Evaluation:
Summary qualitative assessment by the elective preceptor, based on evaluations of the various clinical services through which the student has rotated.
