What are the admission guidelines?
Eligible applicants are those who are in college, who have just recently graduated college, and who are at least seventeen years old and seniors in high school. Admission is highly selective. All application materials must be submitted together by the application deadline of February 15, 2009. Applications with any missing information or applications postmarked later than the application deadline will not be considered.
Can I participate in the HCOP again?
In general, the HCOP aims to provide new students with limited exposure to medicine the opportunity to explore various health professions. However, in certain instances, students may have the opportunity to work again in the HCOP.
What is a typical day like?
Each student spends the majority of the day interning in the department to which he or she is assigned. At the end of the day, all of the students in the program meet as a large group to see interesting lectures and watch engaging movies related to healthcare. Students also meet for weekly small group conferences to have fun and interactive discussions about medical ethics and problems faced by individuals with various types of handicaps and disabilities.
What are the days and hours of participation for the program?
The program runs Monday thru Friday. Depending on the department and the supervisor to which the student is assigned, the day begins somewhere between 8am and 9am. The day ends at 4pm for all students.
How much does the program cost?
The program is free.
How much does the program pay?
The program does not pay a stipend or a salary. Participation is completely voluntary.
Is there any available housing?
Yes, students interning in the Health Career Opportunity Program may stay in NYU Summer Housing during session 1 and session 2. However, NYU Summer Housing is unavailable for session 3. For information regarding summer housing at NYU, visit www.nyu.edu/housing/summer.
What do I wear?
Students are expected to dress professionally. All students must wear closed-toe shoes. On the first day of the program, students will receive an HCOP jacket and a photo ID.
How can I contact the HCOP with questions or concerns?
The best way to contact the HCOP is by e-mail. E-mails are checked on a regular basis and are answered in a timely fashion.
Do I need any letters of recommendation to apply for the HCOP?
Letters of recommendation are completely optional.
