| ABC TV News Seven’s On Call Visits the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Center at Rusk With recent high-profile celebrities having heart attacks and coronary bypass surgery, there has been a focus on what options exist to reduce your cardiovascular risk after such events. Several weeks ago, ABC TV Channel 7 News came to the New York University Medical Center, Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine’s Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Center, to document the patients’ experience in a 12-week telemetric monitored progressive aerobic program. Dr. Aldersberg, from Channel 7, highlighted in his report that Rusk’s program not only focuses on exercise but also provides an educational series on cardiovascular risk reduction through weight reduction and controlling high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. Smoking cessation and stress management programs are also offered as part of the risk reduction series. Coincidently, research was released from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester showing that cardiac rehabilitation was underused after a heart attack, particularly in women and elderly individuals. The point was emphasized that it is important for these patients to make every effort to participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program, because it is effective in improving outcomes after a heart attack.
