Services for People who have had Hip Replacements, Knee Replacements, or Hip Fractures
The Rehabilitation Program at Rusk Institute offers comprehensive care by a team of specialists who provide integrated treatment for people who have had hip or knee replacements, hip fractures, and other orthopedic problems. Treatment will include:
• Medical care
• Rehabilitation nursing care and education
• Gait training
• Psychological support and counseling
• Strengthening and Range of Motion
• Leisure activities
• Activities of daily living
REHABILITATION TEAM
From the moment of arrival, you and your family become a part of the team and remain focal and essential members during the rehabilitation process. Your Physiatrist (physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine) will be the team leader responsible for medical care and the coordination of your rehabilitation treatment program. Other team members include:
• Rehabilitation Nurses
• Social Workers
• Nutritionists
• Recreation Therapists
• Physical Therapists and Assistants
• Vocational Counselors
• Occupational Therapists and Assistants
• Horticultural Therapists
• Psychologists
REHABILITATION PROGRAM
Therapy will be provided in individual or group sessions six days per week. Your regular program will include:
• Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy (a minimum
of 3 hours per day)
• Psychology evaluations and treatment sessions (½ -1 hour, if indicated)
• Horticulture Therapy ( ½ -1 hour, if indicated)
• Other specialists (if indicated)
• Individualized treatments are also scheduled on the weekends to continue
the course toward maximizing your recovery and your ability to perform daily
activities.
The rehabilitation nursing staff will work with you to reinforce functional skills you have achieved in therapy. The nursing staff will also provide you and your family and/or significant others with information concerning your care, including information on your medication, in preparation for discharge.
Your social worker with you and help guide you through the rehabilitation process.
AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY AT THE RUSK INSTITUTE FOR PATIENTS WITH ORTHOPEDIC PROBLEMS:
The length of stay varies depending on the medical and rehabilitation needs of each patient. Your physiatrist, social worker and the rehab team will keep you up-to-date with discharge information. Most patients who have joint replacements or fractures complete their inpatient stay within one to two weeks.
