Manual Wheelchair Seating and Mobility Program

For people who use a manual wheelchair for mobility, selecting the proper chair and accessories can make a major difference in the quality of life. There have been tremendous advances in wheelchair design, making the process of selection seem overwhelming. Consideration must be given to the type of chair (rigid or folding), the chair weight, size and type of wheels, type of cushion and back, and other important features.

The Physical Therapists in The Manual Wheelchair Seating and Mobility Program at Rusk Institute provide expert skill and knowledge to assist each person in choosing the right chair. A physician's referral is required in order to be scheduled for a comprehensive consultation and assessment. The initial evaluation includes muscle and range testing, postural assessment, and measurement of weight, height and body proportions. Information is gathered on other factors that will influence the specific features and dimensions of the chair, e.g. description of the home and/or workplace, lifestyle, level of activity and interests.

In many instances, the selected vendor takes part in the assessment process, adding additional information on the details of the wheelchair prescription. Wheelchairs and seating systems may be available for trial use during the appointment. Therapists and vendors will complete the detailed specifications. The recommendations will be forwarded to the doctor for signature and then to the appropriate insurance representatives, when necessary. The team will follow the process until the wheelchair is approved by the insurance carrier, ordered by the vendor and delivered to the patient.
