Approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in her life. Men are not immune to this disease either. Although effective treatments do exist for many, these treatments sometimes result in additional complications - including pain and decreased motion or strength in the shoulder - which can lead to decreased functional use of the arm. Lymphedema and overall deconditioning can also occur. These complications may occur either during or after the cancer treatments.
Patients referred to Rusk Institute may undergo a treatment plan that includes one or more of the following:
Therapeutic exercise - Emphasizes individualized exercises to improve motion and strength in the shoulder and arm
Postural awareness - Helps strengthen specific postural muscles
Aerobic conditioning - Promotes overall health through a program customized in accordance with guidelines established by the patient's physician
Education - Focuses on specific techniques to decrease joint pain and on instruction in activities of daily living
