What programs and other activities are housed in the new
research center?
The new building contains 11 floors of research
laboratories divided among numerous programs (Cancer Center, Microbial
Pathogenesis, Medicine, Cardiovascular Biology, Neuroscience, Epithelial
Cell Biology, and Genetics), a floor for a central glass wash facility
and other shared and core facilities, a floor containing seminar
rooms, a commons space at the courtyard level, and a
Vivarium in the cellar. Drawings and other information are available

How
big is the new research center be?
The building has 13 floors containing programs
above the courtyard level (and two levels of mechanical space above
those). The floors are each approximately 12,500 square feet, or
about half the size of a Skirball Institute laboratory floor.

The Smilow research building had a ribbon-cutting
ceremony on May 25, 2006, thereby opening the new building.
