Grants 101 Training Session

The office of Sponsored Programs Administration is pleased to present a Grants 101 training session for faculty and administrators.

AVON Foundation, Inc.
AVON Foundation Breast Care Fund

The mission of the AFBCF is to link medically undeserved women to breast health education and screening services. The AFBCF will seek to support programs that:

  • Recruit women for both first time screening and annual screening.
  • Develop partnerships between community-based outreach providers and local medical providers.
  • Work with health care providers to ensure proper clinical follow-up of abnormal screening results.
  • Educate older women about Medicare coverage of annual screening mammograms and assist them in obtaining the service from providers who accept Medicare.

Grants will range from $30,000 to $50,000 per year.
The application deadline is on September 16, 2005.

Crohns and Colitis Foundation
RFA Biomarkers of Colon Cancer in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

  • The proposed studies can focus on the exploration of possible candidate biomarkers to be identified through blood tests, stool tests or tests on simple biopsies of the rectum (no colonoscopy).
  • Potential groups of biomarkers include antibodies against proteins found in pre-cancerous lesions or early cancers, proteins or DNA from cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions that are shed into the stool, and/or identification of genetic mutations that predispose IBD patients to develop colon cancer.
  • This RFA is limited to human investigation and excludes basic in vitro research or preclinical studies in animal models.
  • Specifically, proposed studies could involve:
    • Clinical validation of candidate biomarkers
    • Studies to identify candidate biomarkers
    • Retrospective longitudinal study to evaluate potential biomarker
    • Optimize potential biomarker assay (throughput, reproducibility, etc)
    • Development of innovative imaging tests for pre-cancerous lesions
  • Eligibility: Applicant must hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree, and must be employed by an institution (public non-profit, private non-profit, or government) engaged in health care and/or health related research. Funding is open to all investigators and is not restricted by citizenship or location of the laboratory.
  • Amount of the Award: $130,000 maximum direct costs, plus 10% indirect costs (maximum $13,000) Total award is $143,000 per year.
  • Length of Award: 2 years
  • Letter of Intent Deadline: November 1, 2005
  • Submission Deadline: Applications must arrive on or before January 14, 2006
  • Award Start Date: July 1, 2006

The Stony Wold-Herbert Fund, Inc.

  • The Research Grant and Training Fellowship Program provides funding for the clinical investigation of respiratory diseases and promotes the training of teachers, scientific researchers, and clinicians in the pulmonary field.
  • The Fund designates approximately $200,000 annually to support individual projects focusing on lung disease.
  • Please note that funds are limited to the New York City Metro area (50 mile radius of NYC).
  • Formal application is due by October 15.
  • In November the Medical Advisory Committee makes its recommendations to the Board for the one-year period beginning the following July.
  • The term is one year, with the possibility of renewal.
