Pfizer Inc.

Pfizer Fellowship in Health Disparities, the Pfizer Fellowship in Health Literacy/Clear Health Communication, and Pfizer Scholars Grants in Public Health.

These nationally competitive awards are intended to encourage the career development and promotion of talented junior researchers.

Health disparities:

  • One grant of $130,000, paid over two years will be awarded to an individual who is pursuing scientific research in health disparities.
  • Award funding is primarily intended for salary support.
The proposed research should focus on one or more of the following health disparities research areas:
  • Further identifying and assessing sources of racial and ethnic disparities to illuminate how and why healthcare disparities occur;
  • Increasing awareness about racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare among the general public and key stakeholders;
  • Researching ethical issues and other barriers to eliminate disparities in healthcare;
  • Developing methods for eliminating racial and ethnic disparities; and
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of intervention strategies.
Health literacy/clear health communication:
  • One grant of $130,000, paid over two years will be awarded to an individual who is pursuing scientific research in health literacy/clear health communication.
  • Award funding is primarily intended for salary support.
  • The proposed research should focus on replicable and sustainable interventions that aim to improve outcome measures for low health literacy individuals and/or populations through the use of clear health communication approaches.
  • Outcomes measures include utilization (e.g. hospitalization rates), clinical (e.g. drug compliance), economic (e.g. cost of care), and systemic (e.g. patient satisfaction).

The Board encourages applications that:

  • Focus on one of the following leading public health topics:
  • diet/exercise, smoking cessation, prevention, disease management and adherence;
  • Incorporate interdisciplinary approaches and knowledge; and
  • Bridge the academic and practicing communities.

Pfizer Scholars Grants in Public Health

These awards are meant to support the career development of junior faculty in public health.

  • Up to two grants of $130,000 each, paid over two years, will be awarded to individuals who are pursuing community-based, public health practice research intended to foster academic science and knowledge of public health, and collaborative partnerships between accredited schools or programs of public health and state and local departments of public health.
  • The deadline for applications is January 6, 2006.
  • Award funding will begin July 2006.

Arthritis Foundation

Request for Applications for Fellowship Award 2006.

  • The purpose of the Fellowship Award is to encourage and support rheumatology research by physicians-in-training.
  • The one year non-renewable Fellowships are awarded for clinical or biomedical research.
  • Fellowship Awards are intended for physicians-in-training in recognized ABIM/ACR adult or pediatric rheumatology programs in the Chapter region.
  • Preference will be given to fellows in their 3rd or 4th year of training.
  • Fellowship awards consist of $35,000 in salary support and an additional $5,000 to defray the cost of laboratory expenses associated with the research project.
  • Indirect costs will not be funded.
  • The Chapter will fund two fellows from one institution only if it is not funding the second fellow at the expense of a fundably scored Fellow at another institution.
  • The award begins July 1, 2006.
  • Application is by paper submission only.
  • Application must be received by Friday, December 2, 2005.

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association funds research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease, stroke or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems.

  • Predoctoral Fellowship

To help students initiate careers in cardiovascular or stroke research by providing research assistance and training.

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship

    To help a trainee initiate a career in cardiovascular research while obtaining significant research results.

  • Fellow-to-Faculty Transition Award

    To provide funding for trainees with outstanding potential for careers as physician-scientists in cardiovascular or stroke research during the crucial period of career development that spans the completion of research training through the early years of the first faculty/staff position.

  • Scientist Development Grant

    To support highly promising beginning scientists in their progress toward independence by encouraging and adequately funding research projects that can bridge the gap between completion of research training and readiness for successful competition as an independent investigator.

  • Beginning Grant-in-Aid

    To promote the independent status of promising beginning scientists.

  • Established Investigator Award

    To support mid-term investigators with unusual promise who have demonstrated a commitment to the cardiovascular or cerebrovascular science area as indicated by prior publication history and accomplishments. Offered in July only by National Center.

  • Grant-in-Aid
    • To encourage and adequately fund the most innovative and meritorious research projects from independent investigators.
    • Electronic Submission Deadline is 5 p.m. CST, Jan. 13, 2006.
    • Paper copies are due no later than 5 p.m. CST, Jan. 20, 2006.
