The NYU Division of Pediatric Surgery is always critically reviewing its patients who require surgery to evaluate results. The division has published clinical papers that recommend different medical or surgical management options, and this research is ongoing. Recent publications can be found in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and in Pediatric Surgery International, among other journals.
Treating Obese Adolescents
Some of the most exciting clinical research has been in collaboration with the NYU Program for Surgical Weight Loss. Dr. Evan Nadler in conjunction with Dr. Christine Ren and Dr. George Fielding has been performing laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding for morbidly obese adolescents. This device is not FDA-approved for use in patients under the age of 18, and thus can only be used as part of a clinical trial. Our center is only one of three in the nation that has approval to use the device in adolescents.
Drs. Ren and Fielding are the worlds experts on the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and Dr. Nadler provides the unique advantages that only a pediatric surgeon who specializes in minimally-invasive surgery can bring. There is no other center in the US, and probably the world, that provides the extensive care for obese adolescents and the opportunity for laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding that we do here at NYU. Our recent results in children ages 14-17, which are the first published in the US, can be found in the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery.
